    What are the most important factors to consider when deciding which trailer to buy?

    Whether you’re considering your 1st trailer or buying your 50th, you probably have questions. The Maine Trailer team, which has decades of experience with utility and tag-a-long trailers, offers some expert answers.

    What does a trailer’s Gross Vehicle Weight mean?
    The Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) is an engineering measurement that is set at the lowest rating of the axles, springs, tires or rims.

    Why is GVW important?
    It’s actually more important than the rating on any of the individual components. For example, an axle might be rated at 6,000 lbs, and the tires at 2,000 lbs each, for a total of 4,000 lbs. That means the GVW is 4,000 lbs – despite the higher rating of the axle.

    What about a trailer’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)?
    That’s the manufacturer's rating of the maximum combined weight of the empty trailer with its payload. Usually the GVWR is higher than the GVW, because some of the combined weight is transferred to the towing vehicle. That allows the trailer’s payload to be higher.

    What is the Empty Weight?
    The Empty Weight is the weight of an unattached trailer without any payload.

    What’s Payload?
    The amount of weight you can put on a trailer. Subtract the trailer’s Empty Weight from the GVWR, and the difference is the Payload.

    How important is a trailer’s tire size?
    The larger the tires, the easier the trailer can be pulled, and the less chance of a bearing failure.

    How important is the decking material?
    The thicker the decking, the longer its life span.

    What about the gauge of metal used in construction of the rails and ramps?
    The thicker the gauge of metal, the more rugged and durable the trailer.

    How should the deck frame and coupler tongue be constructed?
    For greater strength and durability, they should be one piece. On some trailers, the deck frame is one piece and the coupler tongue is a second piece attached to the deck frame. That creates a natural weak spot.

    Why do trailers have a jack?
    Jacks keep unattached trailers level. This makes it easier to load and unload, and keeps the trailer’s nose out of the mud and snow.
